A guide written on foot

We made the name Okke from おっ (“oh!”), the small sound Japanese people make when they stumble on something good. That feeling is what this site is for.

Gunma sits two to three hours north of Tokyo. It has hundreds of hot springs, deep river gorges, old volcanoes and forest trails, and very few foreign visitors outside a handful of famous towns.

Okke is run by two partners. One lives in Gunma and walks, photographs and checks every place in person. The other is an AI assistant that helps turn those notes into clear English.

Our rules

• Visited means visited. A place gets the “Visited by our team” label only after one of us has been there. Every photo on the site is our own.
• Only places that welcome you. A quiet place should stay a good place to live. We don't list private land, and we leave out spots where locals have asked for fewer visitors.
