Mt. Komochi

子持山
Mt. Komochi

An old volcano, 1,296 m, that went quiet so long ago that erosion has opened it up. Shishi-iwa, a huge rock tower near the top, is the hardened magma that once filled its throat. From Kotouge pass, a quiet trail climbs through cedar and cypress woods, up log steps and past a moss-covered bench.

Local tip: There is a steep 200 m section with a rope to hold. Wear hiking shoes and carry a bear bell, as on most Gunma trails.
